Interesting facts about birds of prey

 

Those who want to import falcons outside the EU require an import authorisation according to the conditions of the respective recipient country. For the export from Germany, an export authorisation must be provided by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation according to the Cites-agreement concerning the international trade of endangered species of free living animals and plants.


Falcons can be held on a strap / leash in a manner suitable to the bird or in an animal enclosure. The reguiations of the respective recipient country must be observed and obeyed.

 

 

Feed

 

Falcons are carnivorous animals, Feed is mainly composed of freshly slaughtered or freshly thawed meat: Falcons can be fed with :

 

  • new born chicks
  • pigeons
  • quails
  • hens
  • rats

 

Illnesses

 

Even the falcon is not always spared from illness. If the falcon turns down his food, sit around with half-closed eyes and ruffled feathers then it is clearly sick. This animal should be seen to by a veterinary surgeon immediately. All abnormal behavour should be observed, as for example :

 

  • the cleaning of a claw
  • shortness of breath
  • limp hanging wings
  • dark looking eyes
  • running eyes

 

An illness can also cause the discoloration of the bird's excrement to a red or green like colour. Here one should consult a veterinary surgeon. The excrement should ideally be white with black flecks.
